ADVANCE REVIEW: The Steam Man #1
The Steam Man #1
Story by Joe R. Lansdale
Script by Mark Alan Miller
Art by Photr Kowalski
Colours by Kelly Fitzpatrick
Letters by Nate Piekos of Blambot
Let’s judge this book by its cover… The iron giant meets war of the worlds in a Pacific Rim beat down. Stunning cover, the colours and the detail are spot on.
If you’re sitting comfortably we can begin… It’s 1895 and the world has been invaded my aliens in Mecca suits, what chance do 19th century humans have at stopping this onslaught? Well more than you’d think thanks to William Beadle and his Steam Man, a giant steam-powered, top hat wearing kick-arse robot that is more than a match for the aliens.
Now 4 years after the invasion and almost all the alien attackers have died off on their own, maybe from our human germs or maybe from the newest threat to mankind the Dark Rider, a vampire like creature that drinks human blood and creates minions (not the little tic-tac looking fellas) to do his evil bidding called moorlocks. Now with his trusted crew William is hunting the Dark Rider not only to save the world but to avenge his wife.
Giant robots vs aliens? Yes please. Can’t go too wrong with massive battle scenes. Set it over a hundred years ago and now you’ve peeked my interest. I was really looking forward to this title after seeing the cover. However the more I read the more I lost interest. As it became less sci-fi and more supernatural I got bored. This month has been very vampire heavy and I was looking forward to something else. This is still a good book. I just would have liked it to stick to the main premise.
The good, the bad and the star rating…
The Good- the initial concept and the art are great.
The Bad- vampires again.
The Stars- for the start and the hope that it will switch it up and go back to the aliens I’ll give this 3 stars.

- Hey, I'm Shane.
Been into comics since I was about 5. Loved watching Wonder Woman and superboy in the 80's.
I Started reading seriously about 10 years ago. Began to collect a few comic series, Wonder Woman, Supergirl, Batgirl, Teen Titans, Justice League of America and Superman Batman all pre flashpoint. Being honest that was my favourite run.
