All In on the Absolute: DC’s Fresh Take on Batman, Wonder Woman, and Superman

DC’s Bold New Take on Their Icons

DC Comics’ Absolute Universe reimagines its legendary characters with bold new origins and fresh perspectives. This universe, shaped by Darkseid and the DC editorial team, gives us a darker, edgier look at familiar heroes. Each title in the Absolute line has struck a chord with fans, with the first issues selling out rapidly. At the forefront is Absolute Batman, crafted by Scott Snyder and Nick Dragotta, which has quickly become the standout title of the line.

For some this is positioned as DC’s answer to Marvel’s Ultimate line, the Absolute Universe is off to an impressive start. Here’s what we know so far about each title:

Absolute Batman: A Dark Knight with a Axe to Grind

This gritty take on Batman offers a semi-origin story through the lens of Alfred Pennyworth, reimagined as a super-spy tasked with investigating Gotham’s Black Mask gang, known here as the Party Animals. During his investigation, Alfred becomes aware of a mysterious figure known as Batman.

This Batman is not just a masked vigilante—he’s a 24-year-old genius who has worked nearly every job in Gotham, giving him a unique understanding of the city’s inner workings. As Alfred uncovers Batman’s motivations, we see a hero with a strict moral code, choosing brutal yet non-lethal methods to pursue justice.

This Batman is a more violent vigilante, yet he operates with a clear moral compass. In this world, the Dark Knight’s origins have been modified. Martha Wayne, his mother, is still alive, but his father, Thomas Wayne, a humble schoolteacher, was tragically killed during a school trip to the Gotham Zoo. Ironically, the trip was made possible by Bruce winning a contest for his class.

Driven by a burning desire for vengeance, Bruce Wayne has transformed himself into a terrifying force of justice. His suit, a marvel of gothic engineering, is equipped with a utility belt filled with an array of lethal gadgets. His cowl, a menacing mask with bat-like ears concealing deadly batarangs, strikes fear into the hearts of criminals. His cape, a bio-engineered marvel, mimics the flight of a bat, allowing him to soar silently through the night. But it’s his ultimate weapon, a massive, battleaxe, that truly sets him apart. Emerging from his chest plate, the axe, emblazoned with the Bat-symbol, is a symbol of his wrath and a harbinger of doom for Gotham’s underworld.

Absolute Wonder Woman: A Hell-Forged Heroine

In this world, Wonder Woman’s origins are a stark departure from the traditional mythos. Raised not on the idyllic island of Themyscira, but in the infernal depths of Hell, under the tutelage of the sorceress Circe, Diana’s life has been forged in the fires of the underworld. Initially reluctant to train her, Circe recognized Diana’s immense potential and forged her into a powerful warrior princess. Circe is forbidden to utter the word “Amazon,” but still manages raise up a fearless fighter that is unaware of her true heritage. Diana, the Wonder Woman of this universe is destined for greatness.

Now, a formidable force for good on Earth, Diana commands the skies atop her aerial skeletal steed, Pegasus. This unearthly creature, a relic of a forgotten age, is as fearsome as its rider. Together, they form an unstoppable duo, striking terror into the hearts of evil. With her magical bag concealing her enormous sword, a weapon of immense power, Diana is a force to be reckoned with. This revamped Wonder Woman, a creation of the brilliant minds of Eisner Award-winning writer Kelly Thompson and artist Hayden Sherman, brings a fierce, uncompromising edge to the character. Raised in the harsh realities of Hell, she is a warrior driven by a deep-seated anger and a burning desire for justice. Her journey is one of redemption, as she confronts her past and seeks to break free from the chains of her demonic upbringing. She is more than just a hero; she is a force of nature, a divine warrior who will stop at nothing to protect the innocent and punish the wicked.

Absolute Superman: A Kryptonian Underdog

Absolute Superman offers a groundbreaking reinterpretation of the Man of Steel, exploring a previously unseen side of the Kryptonian society. In this bold new vision, Krypton is a world stratified by a rigid caste system, with the House of El belonging to the lowest class. Their iconic crest, a symbol of hope and defiance, is ironically labeled a “scarlet letter” in this oppressive society. This symbol, however, would later be revered as the mark of the “People of Steel,” a fitting homage to the Man of Steel himself.

Unlike traditional Superman stories, Kal-El is raised on Krypton, forging a deep connection to his homeworld. His suit, a living AI, becomes an integral part of his identity, providing not only protection but also companionship and strategic advice. This unique twist adds a layer of complexity to the character, blurring the lines between man and machine.

Alternatively, Lois Lane takes on a pivotal role as an officer of the Lazarus Project, a organization led by Brainiac and the Peacemakers. Despite the dark and dystopian setting, Lois, still coins the iconic name “Superman” for the last son of Krypton.

The narrative delves deep into the intricacies of Kryptonian culture, providing a fresh spin on the classic Superman origin story. While some readers may miss the warmth of the Kent family in the early stages of Kal-El’s journey, the darker, more grounded tone offers a compelling alternative. This Superman is a force to be reckoned with, a powerful being driven by a desire for justice and equality. The story’s action-packed sequences are thrilling, with a few more heartwarming moments that balances the darker themes and further endear the character to readers.

Overall Absolute/All In Initiative Score

A Bold New Dawn or a Faded Flicker?

DC’s All In initiative with the Absolute Universe is a bold and exciting venture, breathing new life into its iconic characters. Absolute Batman stands out as a particularly strong entry, offering a dark and gritty reimagining of the Dark Knight. Absolute Wonder Woman and Absolute Superman also present compelling takes on their respective heroes.

While the initiative’s fresh perspectives and willingness to experiment are commendable, it’s important to acknowledge that DC has embarked on similar ventures in the past, such as New 52, All-Star, Earth-1, and Future State. These previous attempts, while initially promising, ultimately faltered, raising concerns about the longevity of the Absolute Universe.

While I’m cautiously optimistic, it remains to be seen whether the Absolute Universe can sustain its momentum and avoid the pitfalls of its predecessors

Final Score: B+

With Absolute Batman, Absolute Wonder Woman, and Absolute Superman leading the charge, DC has established a strong foundation for the Absolute Universe. But there’s more on the horizon. Upcoming titles like Absolute Green Lantern, Absolute Flash, and Absolute Martian Manhunter promise exciting new twists on these beloved heroes and their legendary lore. Each title will dive deep into new origins, showcasing fresh takes that challenge and expand on what we know about DC’s iconic characters.

If this initial lineup is any indication, the Absolute Universe is only getting started—and it’s a universe that comic fans won’t want to miss.
