Australia Day Review: Maralinga

G“Day Crusaders,

This is Dodgy in the mix bringing you Maralinga by Jen Breach with art by Douglas Holgate.

The history of Maralinga, a remote area in South Australia. A series of Nuclear weapons were tested by the United Kingdom from the mid 1950s to the early 1960s.

What would happen if Nuclear weapons were tested in suburbia?

The scene in this book is a retelling of this history, in a post-apocalyptic Melbourne, in the year 2256. It is a city in ruin, a suburban wasteland where food is scarce and survival is futile especially when it is snowing and there are monsters drifting undetected.

The story is told through the eyes of the young wanderer, her inexperience soon fades page by page as we see elements of hope and destruction within her expedition.

The art in this book really develops with the storytelling, there are some pages without words and you can still comprehend what is going on. The dialogue and monologue enrich the story in certain areas but the art carries it and the backgrounds are like another character in the book. All in All, Breach and Holgate make one hell of a team!

It is simple to read and exciting story of survival. Be warned! It is clingy, like me – you’d survive to read more. Do ya“self a favor and check this out!
