Review: Sentry #3

Synopsis:

This issue opens in New Jersey, six weeks ago. Doug is working as a parking garage attendant and life is boring. Something needs to happen to spice things up! Is he destined for a life of mediocrity? Does he have to overcharge the garage’s patrons $12.00 an hour, $30.00 per day? Is there any hope for his miserable life? Then comes a voice from the past!

The Creative Team:

Jeff Lemire keeps us in suspense throughout this issue as he brings Scout back into Doug’s life. You see, this lowly parking garage attendant used to be the super-powered Cranio and Scout has a proposition for him. Doug is recently out of prison and wants to stay out. Therefore he is no fan of hooking up with Scout. But, he figures, it can’t hurt just to hear him out. Can it? I love how Lemire keeps us guessing as the pages unfold into a story we could never imagine. Great stuff includes the revelation of what Doug’s helmet was all about and the revelation as to what Scout wants with Doug. It may not be what you think it is.

Kim Jacinto and Joshua Cassara know how to build on Lemire’s story. Their panels bring us slowly into the tale before they pack a punch, but when the punch is packed it’s well worth the wait! They open with an unassuming character who we think can’t be anything special. But he turns out to be a lot more than we bargained for. Highlights include when Cranio dons his helmet and later on when he enters Sentry world.

In Conclusion:

What could Scout possibly gain from working with Cranio that he can’t get on his own? Will Bob Reynolds ever be able to leave Sentryverse? Can Billy ever come to terms with his fate? This issue isn’t action-packed but it is full of mystery and will keep the reader guessing as it is a pleasing page-turner that one simply can’t put down. And the ultimate fate of Cranio and Scout is…to be continued. ***1/2 (8.4 rating)
