Punk Rock Pulp Horror With EC Style Chaos
Jesko Morgue starts the whole ride with a cover so chaotic and deliciously demonic you can practically hear it screaming at you from the shelf. Psychedelic gorilla nightmares? Check. Underground zine energy? Check. The kind of art that makes you say, “Yooo, this book’s about to go OFF?” Also check. It’s the perfect warning shot: buckle up, you’re in for that oldschool nasty.
Jonathan Jordan sets the stage with “Curse of the Skulls,” a raw, scrappy, black and white banger that looks like it escaped a haunted Geo cities page in the BEST way. The linework is punk, the energy is dirty, and the vibe hits like a lost midnight movie VHS tape you find in your abuela’s attic labeled “DO NOT WATCH.” And Daniel Blanchard’s writing? Chef’s kiss of pulp horror. Lovers on a trail, weird skulls popping up, tension rising like bad decisions on a summer night then BOOM, that twist hits and you’re grinning like you got away with something. It’s classic horror done with swagger.
Then comes “Silverback,” where John Sowder drops heavy inks thick enough to make the pages feel alive. The monster art? Ridiculous. This demon possessed great ape stomps into the story like it owes you money. Strong, bold, striking and somehow still funny in that “oh hell no” horror comic way. Blanchard goes full exorcist mode with a story that’s wild, loud, and unapologetically pulpy. Sure, the cover spoils the big reveal, but honestly the fun is watching the chaos unfold panel by panel.
What ties Comic Nasties together is the vibe: it knows EXACTLY what it is and delivers EXACTLY the flavor you came for. No grand statements, no heavy metaphors just raw indie horror fun. Pulp thrills. Creepy ink. Bmovie confidence. That “pass me the flashlight, let’s do this” kind of storytelling. It’s nostalgic but never dusty, weird but never sloppy, shocking but never tryhard. It’s horror made with love, sweat, ink, and a punkrock snarl.
Comic Nasties Volume 1 is for anyone who loves skulls, creatures, curses, campgrounds, possession stories, demon apes, and art bold enough to haunt you. It’s the kind of book you read, close, and immediately hand to a friend saying, “Yo… you gotta check this out.”
