Harbinger 25 brings us another action packed issue and a great jumping on point for new readers as an entirely new status quo is set in this excellent series from Valiant. There is also a dig about Firefly being cancelled, which instantly gives it plus points in my book!
Issue 25 sees the fall of Toyo Harada, he thought he could control the world but, things have gone awry and his plan has failed. In the ashes of his failure he inflicts a terrible reckoning on the world setting up future arcs whilst bring the last 24 issues to a satisfying conclusion. As this book is split over several different stories each one weaves seamlessly together to provide new readers like myself a great overview of this corner of the Valiant universe allowing the Harbingers to showcase their abilities in fantastic set pieces. For long time readers the quieter character moments and some of the reveals that are littered throughout this book give a great pay off to previous story arcs and in the quieter moments especially in one particular back up story the strength of the writing really shines through.
The art in this book was phenomenal, through the story showcasing Harada and his abilities you get the sense of how truly powerful he is, each panel crackles with energy as the full extent of his abilities is on display. Whilst in the quieter moments in this book the emotion of the characters really shows. Harbinger goes for a more realistic tone in its art and it works really well, much like Unity the art brings the script to life and showcases the fantastic creators Valiant has working for them.
Harbinger 25 is a great book, it serves as a great jumping on point whilst giving current readers a satisfying highly emotion ride from start to finish. Much like Valiant’s other titles, if you are not reading this already you really should.
