Kickstarter Alert & Review: Fabled Four #1

Ah, the 1980’s.  Back before the was a debate over which was better, PS4 or XBox One; before tablets, Surface Pro’s and laptops all vied for our entertainment buck, the pinnacle of home computing was either the Commodore 64 or the ZX Spectrum.  Both had up to date block graphics that you would……. well at the time you would’ve been amazed!

Fabled Four is a throwback to the style of adventure games that existed before the console revolution and seemed like a natural extension of the D&D craze.  The book features four friends, that have seen their best questing days pass by.  Now, with real life intruding and in part creating in their routine lives, it takes a divorce of one, to force an all for one mentality as they decide to challenge the Great Tower to try an reclaim, their pride, their reason for living and of course for one character, the love of his life.

Jamie Me is a writer and letterer who has successfully had a number of books out in the Kickstarter world.  Me has a talent that can allow him to create a number of different stories, be it political blackmail in Queen or heroic relationships in Start Again.  This is of course not forgetting the hilarious IRL.  Here Me takes the idea of four friends who may have passed their sell by date, looking relive the best parts of their youth, their (as Springsteen would say) Glory Days.  There are no doubts that this type of desperate existence has its mirror in real life.  In order to give the trope a fresh look, Me sets the real life battles amongst this fictitious battle of a Dungeons and Dragons world.

Luke Summerscales provides the art, effectively recreating the block graphics of yesteryear.  Now as you look through the book you may think that the art is simple, flat not even 2D.  The thing is, not every book has to have Jim Lee or Greg Capullo art to work.  Art does need to be able to tell the story; and against this yardstick, Summerscales effectively achieves his goal.  There is a lot of humour on show that will resonate with fans of old school computer games.  The colors are bright with little nuance that fits the vibe of the book brilliantly. Jonathan Carter has clearly done his homework in recreating the lettering fonts of the era.  Archie Dait is the editor keeping all the chaos, the head rolling and the impacts of the gangs choices.

Kickstarters are a great way to check out different styles of story, of different styles of art and with a creator of the calibre of Jamie Me involve, you know that the project will deliver a quality product.
