MONGO’s Comic Picks from 7/27
I had a lot of issues waiting at my shop this past Wednesday, but a few didn’t show so my list will be missing a few DC titles.  GL Corps #1 , and Nightwing #1 didn’t arrive and I will have to wait till next week to catch up.  As many of these books will or all ready have feature reviews here I am transitioning to more of a “rapid fire” take on each issue.
Wonder Woman #3
Written by Greg Rucka
Art by Liam Sharp
“THE LIES”“ Chapter Two: Wonder Woman must team up with Cheetah to solve a growing mystery about Themyscira as “The Lies”“ continues!  I am a straight up Liam Sharp MONGO-fan!  The parallel running titles have been working great for me and I rather enjoy the mix of history and present weaving month to month.  I will continue to PULL this title as long as Rucka, Sharp and Scott remain.  I can’t get enough of Cheetah as envisioned by Mr. Sharp and the story telling shows Diana as not only a fierce warrior but as a symbol of the best humanity can aspire for.  What a great role model for woman and man-kind as a whole.  We see Cheetah as less of an adversary and more of a casualty of circumstances.  I am not trying to pass myself off as a SJW by any means but this current run, albeit slow in pass is packed full of awesome content.
PULL!
Titans #1
Written by Dan Abnett
Art by Brett Booth, Norm Rapmund, Andrew Dalhouse, & Carlos M. Mangual
As Lilith attempts to unlock Wally’s memories we get a rather shocking reveal of who has stolen time from the Titans. Â The bonds of the group continue to grow with Abnett’s story and the art doesn’t disappoint. Â I was hesitant after the Rebirth one shot but I was not disappointed in this issue. Â I look forward to the series continuation!
PULL!
Red Hood and The Outlaws Rebirth #1
Written by Scott Lobdell
Art by Dexter Soy, Veronica Gandini
I gave Scott Lobdell a chance and picked this title up.  I am glad I did.  The story is basically narrated from Jason’s perspective and was a great telling of his origin story.  Dexter Soy’s art with colors by Veronica Gandini were also a pleasant part of this one shot opener.  I am a fan of the mythos of the Red Hood and find his good/evil dichotomy a great start for  future issues.
I am PULLing for now.
Flash #3
Written by Joshua Williamson
Art by Carmine Di Giandomenico, Ivan Plascencia and Steve Wands
I was lukewarm until this issue.  I am back on board the Flash book.  I have embraced the Speed Force storm and I like where Williamson is taking it by showing the various reactions to it.  I love the art teams view of the Speed Force! PULL!
Detective Comics #937
Written by James Tynion IV
Art By: Â Alvaro Martinez and Raul Fernandez
Fantastic all around! Â Great character development, lots of hidden references to the Batman history/legacy and some modern strokes which make this a definite PULL! Â Detective Comics is in great hands with Mr. Tynion IV!
Batgirl Rebirth #1
Written by Hope Larson
Art by Rafael Albuquerque and Dave McCaig
I enjoyed this one shot and it makes me optimistic for the series. Â I liked taking Babs out of Gotham and I dug the hell out of the teams take on her eidetic memory as it translated to the page. Â The art grew on me with each page and I look forward to the next #1 issue! Â PULL!
Action Comics #960
See Comic Crusaders review by yours truly for a bit more on Action 960. Â Suffice to say I am enjoying this series. Â It is paced slower than Detective Comics but it is working for me and the art work is really quite good. PULL!
Civil War II #4
Written by Brian Michael Bendis
Art by David Marquez, Justin Ponsor, Clayton Cowles, & Victor Ochoa
Finally I have an issue of CW II I can get behind. Â I hope they now have enough time and pages remaining to bring the story to a sensible conclusion. Â To be clear, I enjoy the concept of CW II and think it relatively identifiable correlation with modern times. Â I have just been reluctant because it feels more lopsided than the prior Civil War. Â It is very hard for me to get behind Carol’s position. Â I do feel like the pace improved on this issue and the artwork continues to be the books strong point. Â I will see this main series through and PULL but I hope for brighter days in Marvel.
Black Panther #4
Written By Ta-Nehisi Coates
Art by Brian Stelfreeze, Laura Martin, Matt Milla & Joe Sabino
I love Coates Black Panther!  PERIOD!  Get these books!  The story is so good, little to no typical comic action and more depth to the people of Wakanda, their history and philosophy.  Check out our review sections for some excellent full reviews of Mr. Coates’ entire run. PULL!
Captain America: Â Steve Rogers #3
Written by Nick Spencer
Art by Jesus Saiz
After the massive drama of issue #1 we are beginning to see some deterioration of Hydra Cap and glimpses of the hero’s return. Â I as well as many long time comic readers no doubt anticipated this turn. Â I still enjoy the series and plan to stick it through, if for no other reason than an “I told you so” to the clamoring gobshites’ reaction to issue #1.
Still a PULL for me.
If you haven’t sensed the trend, and I am sure you have, most of my weekly lists are comics I continue to enjoy and recommend you go out and read. Â I only point this out to praise the great group of reviewers at Comic Crusaders. Â I encourage you to check out the reviews and previews here to develop your own personal pull list. Â When I started my weekly ramblings in this series my goal was and still is to get everyone in their local comic shops to buy what you like and keep this great medium of Superhero goodness around for future generations of comic book nerds!
Cheers,
MONGO!!!!
