REVIEW: Moon Knight # 199
This issue opens in Williamsburg, Brooklyn, New York at the Carbonatium Cafe. Ernst is working double time to influence our hero. He won’t stop talking whether it’s politics, Pop Culture or monsters. He’s talking so fast and hard that our hero can’t think straight, which is, I think, the idea.
The Creative Team:
Max Bemis is working hard to influence the personalities that make up Marc Spector. He cleverly keeps the reader guessing as we see Marc with varied confused and angry looks. We don’t know if Marc is starting to believe this make-shift nazi or not. A comic book that is mostly talk manages to keep us glued until the final page. Not much action here but fans of Marc Spector will be kept wondering if he can keep his senses with this verbal onslaught that could take him to the brink. Great stuff includes Ernst getting under Marc’s skin and Moon Knight’s confusion over whether or not a young man is an actual monster or not.
Paul Davidson gives us the right blend of over the top images and realistic depictions that only enhance the surreal tone of this story. A slightly cartoony feel and the strong snowfall throughout this issue keeps us slightly out of focus which is where this team wants to keep us. We are not supposed to see clearly here at all. Viewing this verbal onslaught along with Marc keeps us on our toes. Highlights include the creatures from Marc’s id that keep popping up making us wonder about the reality of the situation and the splash where Marc faces Ernst and retaliates against his tormentor. It reminds me of Dr. Morbius from Forbidden Planet when he finally realizes that the danger was within himself all this time.
In Conclusion:
The fragile, schizophrenic mind of Marc Spector is at risk here as his tormentor takes him to the brink of insanity with his confusing arguments about just about every subject under the sun. Can Marc take this abuse and come out on top. Ernst threatens his loved ones unless Moon Knight recants his very existence. Will Moon Knight/Marc Spector fall prey to these tactics or wind up on top? To be continued. ***1/2 (8.4 rating)
