Grover is getting himself fixed up at the hospital after barely keeping his head on in the previous issue. He gets an emergency phone call and checks himself out of the hospital, against the recommendation of his doctor. Needless to say Grover is having a bad day that’s about to get worse!
The Creative Team:
I love a gritty noir style thriller and Jacob Sehman delivers the goods with this Image title. It’s not noir per-say but the elements are there. Great stuff includes Grover risking his health to aid his friends and certain characters struggling with their identity and lifestyle. Nash gets a strange message from a colleague on her cell and feels like something ain’t right in pleasantville. There’s plenty of plot twists to keep the reader guessing. And wanting to get to the next issue ASAP. The subject of bullying is a strong one in today’s society and kudos for this creative team for trying to make a statement about the subject and give victims a platform to be heard from.
Jorge Corona brings his artistic talent to the forefront as his characters are slightly over the top and surrealistic. The opening with Grover’s giant eyeball while he’s being examined in the hospital is a great way to introduce this chapter. I get the distinct impression that he was heavily influenced by the likes of Mike Mignola and Frank Miller. His style is by no means a direct imitation of either but I’ll bet he includes Daredevil, the Dark Knight and Hellboy in his comic book collections.
In Conclusion:
A great chapter that answers a lot of questions and raises many more. Is Grover on the right trail? Is he closer to solving the mystery or is there more that he doesn’t yet know about? Is Jad actually dead? Nash gets deeper involved in Vi’s plight and shows real concern about her friend, even though there’s something sinister about the whole situation. And what happens when Nash puts her contacts…to be continued. ***1/2 (8.8 rating)
