REVIEW: Absolute Carnage Separation Anxiety #1

The Solicitation:

Since the conclusion of DEADPOOL VS. CARNAGE, four of the five LIFE FOUNDATION SYMBIOTES ”“ Riot, Phage, Agony and Lasher ”“ have been bonded to a stray dog, wandering the Midwest. But as Carnage descends on New York, its siblings will find it impossible to resist the siren song of KNULL.

The Review:

The title of this Absolute Carnage title, ”˜Separation anxiety“ is that emotion felt by children when separated from a parent or friend, further defined by a feeling like loneliness, lose or sadness. Writer Clay Chapman has something darker and more terrifyingly poetic in mind.

Depending on your social attachment style when family dysfunction is present, such as constant fighting among spouse it might be better to separate, or it might be better to stick together and stick it out through the bad times; however, Clay Chapman“s dark vision centers on the children and they harm they face from their parent“s dysfunctional interactions.

The symbolistic harm is represented by four of the five LIFE FOUNDATION SYMBIOTES ”“ Riot, Phage, Agony and Lasher, and the fact the family is consumed by symbiotes triggered by the venomous words of their parents.  Clay Chapman“s approach is interesting in that he does not shy away from putting children in harm’s way, which made it a gripping read all the way through.

Absolute Carnage, ”˜Separation anxiety“ #1 has that weirdness that“s an easy thing to aim for yet difficult to actually achieve. But here you can tell what Clay Chapman“s intentions are, which is much harder if an entire audience thinks they knows where you“re trying to wind up.

Out of 5 stars I give it a 5. The art by Brian Level is incredibly detailed in some panels and delivers the gore and nastiness I“m looking for.  As part of the greater Absolute Carnage title this a great edition but really this could have stood by itself as a one shot.  Otherwise Dark Red continues to be a good read and something I will look forward to seeing adapted to the screen in the future.
