This issue opens with Lois sky-diving into Longamba to save her father from their corrupt government who are bent on putting him to death. We also see Superman along with Booster Gold arriving at New Krypton. Lois hooks up with her friend, Hambi, after meeting him at the designated rendezvous point. Booster and Supes are searching for the way home when the authorities of New Krypton discover them and imprison them.
The Creative Team:
Dan Jurgens has his hands full with two stories happening simultaneously. He does a good job of keeping us guessing where, and when, New Krypton was formed. The gold one and the man of steel aren’t even sure where and when they are. I love a good mystery and the plot thickens as this unusual dynamic duo travel deeper into the heart of madness. Zod seems to have succeeded beyond his means in setting himself up as Emperor Supreme of this planet converted to resemble his home world. It’s great stuff! Jurgens is a master at keeping us guessing at every page.
Will Conrad does a masterful job at bringing this tale to eloquent life. His version of New Krypton is striking in it’s simplicity, it seems like a new world but evokes the memory of the original planet. Highlights include Booster and Kal approaching the statue of Zod, as well as Lois leaping from the airplane into the third world country of Longamba. Also Superman’s battle with the eradicator android.
In Conclusion:
Superman and Booster Gold make an interesting team as the Last Son of Krypton is in no mood for future boy’s sarcastic wit and antics. He’s on a serious mission to find answers about his home world and the villains that survived it’s destruction. The friction is there even as the two strive to work together. Lois successfully lands in Longamba and meets up with resistance leaders that are ready and willing to assist her. Superman is making quick work of his adversaries and seems to be succeeding in his goal when…to be continued. ***1/2 (8.8 rating)
