Review: Adventures of The Super Sons #9
A wild (west) cross over appears! Bless Peter Tomasi for this cute little (almost) campy writing in the sector of space/the universe that is Jonah Hex’s who is, by far, one of my favorite underused characters. There’s playfulness to most of the interactions between Jon Kent and Damian Wayne, whose banter is both charming and age appropriate, that makes me smile as I opened this title to read all its pages despite everything else that might be going on outside of Hexworld.
The art by Scott Godlewski is a bit rougher on Hex’s face, I admit, but god doesn’t it make up for that by being so beautifully focused when drawing on Jon or Damian. I’d imagine that it’s quite a difficult feat to fill Jimenez’s shoes, and Godlewski does a fantastic job of that. The art style, especially when drawing the boys, looks so similar to that which I had become accustomed to with Super Sons itself that I appreciate it entirely because GOD, those sweet little faces.
The issue itself reads something close to an in between that regards the things happening on Jon and Damian’s home world but never really does much to help resolve such until things with Hex resolve themselves. I think the main reasoning for such is that to progress forward in story, the boys needed to acquire a very specific thing from Hexworld and managed to help Jonah in the doing so. The latter of which might come into play later when the boys face a new refocused young Lex Luthor.
I think that, especially for the younger characters facing such a big event and ultimate sort of showdown, that the break between the action of what had happened is welcome. Levity amidst dark times is something that few writers often find a balance of and that thing is appreciated, especially for myself, more than I can express. (Especially given the fact that many people often refer to DC as grimdark.) There’s enough banter in their to make anyone smile, as well as a pretty well hidden twist that I won’t spoil, since it does warrant reading so that you can discover such yourself.
I’m hoping that everything leads up to Jonah playing an active part in the future. I think that small addition to the boys’ team because it would be nice to see some guidance for them out in the middle of impending doom. If anything, I think that this little sidestep from main action is worth checking out, especially since I feel like Jonah Hex a little extra oomph that this 3.5 out of 5 star writing needs.
