It’s not quite often that comic book readers have an opportunity to purchase an issue that’s worth more than what they are paying for. The Amazing Spider-Man #10 is an ideal example of such a rare occurrence. All of the components that could have possibly been gathered to make this chapter of a complex undertaking like Spider Verse enjoyable were most certainly present. You’re really missing out if this book, and the event for that matter, is not a part of your collection.

We’re now knee deep into the Spider-Verse epic, and in this issue, the action intensifies, while it simultaneously develops separate story arcs that will be told in the upcoming issues of Spider-Woman, Scarlet Spiders, and Spider-Man 2099. Of course, these issues will coincide with the ASM, Spider-Verse, and Spider-Verse Team-Up titles.

Numerous Spider characters, or Totems as they are known in this storyline, make their appearance in ASM #10, eventually uniting in their attempt to combat the threat of genocide at the hands, or mouths, of the Inheritor family. Of the more notable Spider characters, the Superior Spider-Man’s authoritative presence throughout this book is vehemently apparent.

Dan Slott does a good job of maintaining the personalities of every character that appeared in this book intact. Not an easy feat by any means, especially with so many new Spider-people having been introduced in recent weeks. The passion within his script could be felt the most with the Superior Spider-Man and Silk. Adversely, I felt it that same passion was somewhat lacking with Spider-Gwen and Spider-Woman (Jessica Drew).

The same could be said for the combined efforts of Olivier Coipel, Wade Von Grawbadger and Justin Ponsor on the art, inking, and coloring. It’s not an easy task to draw and color so many different Spider characters in one book and make each one stand apart in a predominate sea of blue and red Spider costumes set against a dark ambiance.

One minor concern with the artwork was centered on “our” Spider-Man, the Peter Parker of Earth-616. Is it me, or is he slowly being altered to resemble Andrew Garfield? You decide.

Overall, I give this book a 4.5 rating out of 5. This issue was action packed from the very beginning, no doubt about it; however, it did seem to be rather fast paced with a “we haven’t seen nothing yet” feeling to it.

In closing, I highly recommend picking up a copy of this issue. What I really wanted to say was “Spider-Friends, GO FOR IT!!”, but I can’t say that anymore!

Until next time!
