Review: Amazing Spider-Man Renew Your Vows #14

Synopsis:

Peter is getting his family together for a family fun day at Coney Island. But how much fun can you have at a beach that’s overrun with Lizards? The Lizard is not happy as this issue opens and our Spider-heroes are desperately trying to bring normality back to Coney Island. Whenever the Parkers want to get away from it all, it seems that it all won’t get away from them!

The Creative Team:

Jody Houser begins page one with an action packed introduction to this issue that sees our heroes in deadly combat with the green scaled reptile that is one of Peter’s most dangerous villains from way  back. Then we cut to the day before at Avengers mansion where Tony Stark is testing Mary Jane’s costume. She’s discussing how hard it was for her to get to the mansion when Tony asks why she didn’t drive. Her answer; Annie has the car today. It’s a nice little slice of life issue that shows us some of the problems that made the original Spider-Man so relatable in the first place. The fact that they have to deal with a fixed income and the everyday problems that we all do.

Nick Roche brings a nice touch to the proceedings as the story unravels. The focus here is on Mary Jane and he delivers some fine splash pages and action scenes in this issue. the testing of her suit at Avengers mansion is a nice touch and when she leaps into action to stop a bully, only to realize that all of the kids on the corner think she’s after them brings a tender moment to this issue. All in all it’s great stuff.

In Conclusion:

We think we’re getting a standard Lizard story throughout the proceedings, but things are not always as they appear. It’s a fun ride through what might be a mundane action story but the twist at the end keeps our interest and we’ll surely want to get the next issue when it’s revealed that the Lizard wasn’t doing what everyone thought he was doing…to be continued. *** (7.7 rating)
