REVIEW: AQUAMAN #51

“So, he“s crazy.”“ ”“ Jackson Hyde

Synopsis:

This issue opens with Arthur Curry driving the son of his arch-nemesis, Black Manta, towards the edge of a cliff. They“re discussing why he is not like his father and both are apologetic about their recent encounter. Aquaman gets out of the jeep, removes his shirt and tells Jackson that the road will only take you so far and yells as he jumps off the cliff into the water “Follow me.”“ Jackson hesitates, but then with a what the hell attitude jumps in too.

The Creative Team:

Kelly Sue DeConnick gives us a kingdom that is in demand for the return of it“s king, but the queen seems to be unsure of what she wants as Cetea is trying to goad the queen and pressure her to accept what seems to be best for the kingdom of Atlantis. I“m enjoying this title a lot as we see the characters being fleshed out. They“re not simple caricatures but three-dimensional beings with doubts and insecurities, struggling with decisions and not knowing what“s best for them and the kingdom. Great stuff includes Aqualad trying to find a title for his relationship to Aquaman and the reveal of this month“s villain(s). Rocha and Henriques make a great team. Henriques inks compliment the pencils of Rocha in ways that Joe Sinnott complimented Jack Kirby back in the day. I am enjoying their take on our aquatic heroes and they bring out the best in these characters. Highlights include Aqualads dive off the cliff and the final splash reveal.

In Conclusion:

The King of Atlantis saga continues as this issue reveals a little bit of the politics of Atlantis. We“ve got a new dynamic duo as Aquaman must get used to the antics of the new Aqualad. We also witness a queen who may not be as willing to see the return of the king and the return of the King“s arch-nemesis plus a nice little twist at the end as we see”¦to be continued ***1/2 (8.7 rating)
