Review: Astonishing X-Men #11

Synopsis:

Proteus has won. The X-Men have lost. Proteus has initiated his plan for our world and it could be heaven or it could be hell. depending on who you are. This issue opens with major destruction of many earth cities and segues into Psylocke taking command of the defeated team. Archangel is by her side. Other team mates are leaping into the fray weather Psylocke wants them to or not. The opening of this chapter in the story is action packed to say the least. Our heroes may be down but they’re not out!

The Creative Team:

Charles Soule knows his team well and the reactions of the team mates to Proteus is spot on. Logan has to keep reminding the team that he’s not their Logan at all, but his in it to win it nonetheless.  Proteus is up to his old deceptive illusions as the team tries to gain the upper hand. Great stuff includes Kevin (great name, by the way) getting an unexpected visit from a long-lost relative which only serves to embolden Proteus ( no spoilers) and the team trying something new in their attempt to take down this arrogant antagonist.

Ron Garney’s art brings about a sense of the surreal as illusions abound in our heroes quest to restore humanity to its rightful place in the universe. His art along with Matt Milla’s color scheme conveys the warped and twisted universe Proteus has created which he thinks will benefit mankind. It’s a dazzling look into what earth’s future will be if our team doesn’t succeed. Highlights include the prolog and destruction scenes of some earth’s greatest cities. Plus the attack of Proteus on Old Man Logan.

In Conclusion:

action, action, action! That’s what defines this chapter and it’s a great one. Proteus has, indeed, defeated the X-Men, but that doesn’t mean that they’re taking defeat lying down! It’s a no holds barred all out war as the students of Charles Xavier attempt to regain the upper hand I loved the adrenaline rush as the team devises a new way to take down their opponent. Will this new trick succeed or… to be continued. *** (8.2 rating)
