REVIEW: B.P.R.D: Hell on Earth # 132

Writer: Mike Mignola, John Arcudi
Artist: Peter Snejbjerg
Colorist: Dave Stewart
Cover Artist: Laurence Campbell
Publication Date: June 17, 2015

We are back in Kansas, joining Johann as he concludes his multi issue journey of self-doubt.

Johann returns to the scene of his most recent possession which had caused a number of fractures in the B.P.R.D team. Whilst there he has a conversation, of sorts, whilst also resolving the monster of the week problem.

Writers Mike Mignola and John Arcudi continue Johann’s struggle to understand himself and his actions. The main thrust of the issue is the conversation with agent Enos which starts Spock like, before laying crumbs to the idea of a greater conspiracy. The script remains consistent from previous issues, Johann’s doubt and then his strength of duty seems quite real, reacting in quite a human way.

Peter Snejbjerg’s art is also consistent. His work, whilst maybe not spectacular, does fit the Mignola-verse well.  The book looks creepy and eerie which I guess is should as it caters to both a big monster and a communion with the dead.  That atmosphere is greatly emphasized through the magic of Dave Stewart, who is again fantastic. If a picture is worth a thousand words, then the colours are the emotional connection.

On first reading, I have to admit being a tad disappointed in this issue. The monster of the week in this run of issues is just a means to get Johann in a contemplative mood. As a long time comic reader, I expect the monster to be dealt with. As such I would have preferred more of the repercussions of the fallout of the previous issues, which are left tantalizingly hanging waiting for resolution.  Upon reflection though, and a second reading, I take my hat off to Mignola and Acurdi who are clearly planning a long game.

This book, as with the majority of the Mignola-verse is the epitome of consistency. Fans of the book will no doubt recognize that a proper meal of a story is eventually more satisfying than a Big Mac fast food conclusion.
