Review: Batman #48

Man, planning a wedding can be the worst. Especially when it comes to filling the big roles.Like Maid of Honor or Best Man. There is always someone whose feeling get hurt when they aren“t picked. Usually there is a little grumbling and resentment, but everyone gets over not being picked.

Unless the person who wasn“t picked happens to be The Joker. Then you act out inappropriately, like slaughtering an entire wedding party to get Batman“s attention. And once Batman shows up, hostage shenanigans go into overdrive.

Honestly, at this point Bruce should be considering eloping or just calling the whole thing off. And who would blame him, with all the violence escalating in every part of Gotham as the date draws near.

As twisted and fun as this story is, I really have to wonder who the big bad will be that tries to ruin the actual wedding. I had figured Tom King (Vision, Mr. Miracle, Sheriff of Babylon) would spring The Joker there. I mean who would be more iconic than Joker?

I do have one slight quibble, at one point Joker shoots Batman at point-blank range, but the bullet bounces off Batman“s cowl. Joker makes a comment about the special kevlar in the hood. It dropped me out of the story for a second, because I had to think that Kevlar or not, Batman would at least have a serious concussion. But, I digress.

The story moves along briskly as Joker figures out how to solve his hostage crisis, despite his itchy trigger finger.

Mikel Janin (Dark Nights Metal, Grayson, Justice League Dark) is having a great time drawing the fight in the cathedral and it really shows. He uses the shadows and lights to their best effect during the fight. He is a master of picking the correct angle for each panel that really propels the book forward and provides so much of the momentum in this issue.

After this, there is only one issue between us and the wedding of Batman and Catwoman. I have to say I am really curious about who will show up for issue number 50, but the crime-fighting couple will have to survive the Joker a little long to be able to say, “I do.”“ That is if there is still a church left standing in Gotham.
