Review: Batman #66

”¢Batman #66 is the First installment of the “Maelstrom of the mind” story Arc.The “Knightmares”“ storyline continues! Something-or someone-is forcing Batman to live through some of his darkest fears.

Most people are familiar with the term ”˜ghosting“”Š”””Šwhen somebody becomes silent and won“t respond to your messages.  We ask questions, we wonder, we ponder. We have thoughts that run through our brains about why we aren“t getting the response we desire so much. We create narratives about why people aren“t responding in the way we hoped. That is the basis for Batman #66 as an avatar for batman sits down to question the an avatar for Catwoman.

When Batman #50 went down I had so many questions and the fact that everybody moved on like it wa nothing bothered me. I wanted answers. The truth is I don“t have all the answers now and I will never have all the answers to the many questions I have about this part of the Batman story. What I do know is that we often have situations in our lives that don“t meet our expectations and we have a choice as to how we react. So, what do we do when we don’t have the answers we want and aren“t able to properly close the door?

At the core Batman #66  is the fact that he had a deep relationship with somebody for more than a  year and it went awry.  The relationship had elements to it that were complicated and unhealthy.  But the way she broke the engagement off denied Batman closure.  When we are refused closure, however, attempts to understand what happened flood our conception of our past, present, and future. We are left to wonder, ‘what did I do?’, ‘how could someone I thought I knew so well do this to me?’ and ‘how can I trust myself to make future decisions when my past decisions have caused me so much pain?

What’s interesting is the way Tom King has unveiling the pieces of the narrative. In taking this route, Batman will be demonstrably shown to have learned how to find closure within himself instead of looking to someone else to give it to him. Perhaps  when given Batman is given closure, future writers can re-structure his past, present, and future in an interesting way, through understanding what went wrong and re-configuring the Batman Mythos accordingly.
