Review: Batwoman #6

We“re given a glimpse into the future of Gotham City in Batwoman #6 and you guessed it, it“s not too bright. Kate Kane, who is now the commander of The Colony, has returned to the DC universe“s original dystopian city in an attempt to correct a mistake she made five years ago. Her job will not be easy as the city is now been divided and constantly under the watch of Brother Eye and Batman“s army who brutally enforce the peace at any cost.

Part One of the “Open Fire”“ story arc presents to us an expanded view of what we“ve only witnessed previews of. This is not the Gotham City you“re used to. It“s much worse. Not only is it”¦”¦Gotham, but now it“s a draconian police state with no hint of privacy. In other words, it“s a tremendous place to raise a family!
The first issue of this arc does a fine job of setting up the rest of the near-future drama. We“re given plenty of information regarding what has happened over the last five years, but we“re left with many more questions to bring us back for the next issue. (You“ll be glad you read the issue, trust me.)

Marguerite Bennett and James Tynion IV have really made a tremendous team with the Batwoman series in this Rebirth era. The fist story arc “The Many Arms of Death proved to me that Batwoman was a character who could survive on her own, outside of the gritty world of Gotham and away from the watchful eye of the man in the cowl. She is a force to be reckoned with and deserves the freedom this writing team has granted her.

Adriano Lucas has worked magic with the colors in this issue. The striking blue hues, which glow off the first few pages, give way to a classic noir style that is immediately recognized as Gotham. This work truly does justice to the art of Renato Arlem.

This issue, “Pax Batmana”“ is a perfect place to jump into the Batwoman series. You“re being given what looks like it will be a really tremendous story arc, and it is based in a future none of us have really seen, so you won“t feel as if you“re missing anything that has happened before. The character introductions are easy to understand for new readers so you“ll be up to speed in no time. If you“ve ever been a fan of anything related to the Batman universe, this book will absolutely be for you.
