REVIEW: Big Trouble in Little China/Escape from New York #6
We’re down to the last battle. Winner gets all the chalupas. The fun ride that has been Big Trouble in Little China/Escape from New York is facing the last series of loops with the fun dialed up to 10. Normally, I’d say to hold the fort, keep the home fires burning, and if we’re not back by dawn, call the president. But somebody already did that. It wasn’t helpful.
On the run from Lo Pan and all the evil Snake Plisskens, our band of heroes find themselves betrayed by Bob Hauk and the United States Police Force only a few miles away from the safe haven of Buffalo. Jack Burton, the “good”“ Snake Plissken, Blind Apple Mary, Bobby and Helene are under fire from the army’s secret weapon: a magic guitar-powered cannon. But Snake isn’t having any of that. After all, he remembers what they did to Fresno Bob.
Yeah, if you’re not willing to roll with that, you probably got off this ride a couple of issues ago. Greg Pak and Daniel Bayliss are having so much fun shaking the pillars of heaven, you can’t help but have a good time if you let yourself be pulled along. I was so happy that somebody finally figured out how to use Jack’s good luck to their advantage.
While Pak (Totally Awesome Hulk, Teen Titans) is throwing idea after idea at the page, Bayliss (Labyrinth, Mighty Morphing Power Rangers) is clearly keeping up with flying dragons, ghostly wizards (or wizardly ghosts), and granny blues guitarists. He’s having a ball drawing all of these double-crosses, betrayals and triple-crosses. It’s enough to make you wave a muscle-T in surrender.
If you haven’t figured out how it ends, well then you never saw either of the cult classics this series is based upon. Because even though Jack never drives faster than he can see, Lo Pan gets one last twist in. And it’s a doozie.
