REVIEW: Big Trouble In Little China #6

Growing up during the 80s, I have some very fond memories of the movie, Big Trouble In Little China so I was very excited to get the chance to review Big Trouble In Little China #6. Unfortunately, it does not quite do it for me as much as the movie did.

To recap the story, Miao Yin and Egg continue their journey on the Midnight Road as they try to get away from Lo Pan“s influence, while Jack Burton and Wang continue their journey as they are unknowingly being chased by the deadly assassins known as the Zhang Brothers.

For all its failings, Big Trouble In Little China #6 is a pretty entertaining book. Writer Eric Powell has actually done a pretty good job at nailing the characters“ personalities, helping make this book serve as a continuation of the original adventures. There is plenty of humor and odd situations, but I was never really excited or rooting for any of the characters to succeed. The one exception to this being Miao Yin“s character. Throughout this series, Miao Yin has always been the helpless maiden in need of a white knight, but she kicked some serious butt in this issue with some never-before-seen martial arts skills. As the series progresses, I hope Powell continues to deviate from the original story with interesting departures such as these, helping the characters progress and making them more three-dimensional.

The best part of this book though is the art. Brian Churilla“s work really makes this book much more interesting with some original character designs, and very fluid action sequences. Among my favorite creatures has to be the alien dressed as Hank Williams – yes, you read that right.

Overall, Big Trouble In Little China #6 won“t be winning any awards, but it“s a fun book filled with humor and worth reading if you“re looking for something different and unique.
