REVIEW: Black Widow #20

Black Widow #20
Writer – Nathan Edmondson
Artist – Phil Noto
Letterer – VC’s Clayton Cowles

Don’t judge a book by its cover, or do, your choice…

A very simplistic cover, I’m not a fan of this style of cover. That said it sums up the story inside nicely.

A long, long time ago in the last issue…

Natasha has left S.H.I.E.L.D to atone for her past with the Red Room. Still a member of the Avengers when they need her, until then it’s just her and her cat Liho.

Now back to your regularly scheduled programming…

The issue opens in the midst of secret wars as Natasha is saving as many people as she can. We flashback quickly to Havana. Natasha and her then Red Room partner Marina are trying to help a family defect. Natasha’s orders are simple. Kill the parents and make it public. When Natasha asks if she should kill the child too, her boss looks horrified that she would be so ok with that and tells her no. Having no problem following orders she sets up a meet and using a sniper riffle she takes out the pair without blinking. Does she stop there? Oh no. Next she shoots Marina’s boyfriend then Marina herself. Does she stop there? Oh no. Though I wish she had. Next she shoots Marina’s cat. Flash forward and Nat is back saving people, we see what bought on the flashback as man she saved holds his cat. This dark, heartless side of the black widow shows why she is trying so hard to do good today. Doubtful she will ever be back in the black. The art in this book is very good. The faces show so much emotion, or lack there of in Natasha’s case. The tones of the colours are great for this story.

It’s all fun and games until someone loses an eye…

The death toll rings up quickly as this book goes on. The poor cat didn’t need to die. That was just to show how merciless she was.

The good, the bad and meh…

Good – great artwork. Compact story.
Bad – cat killer.
Meh – the cover for me was just me.

Hey, I'm Shane.
Been into comics since I was about 5. Loved watching Wonder Woman and superboy in the 80's.
I Started reading seriously about 10 years ago. Began to collect a few comic series, Wonder Woman, Supergirl, Batgirl, Teen Titans, Justice League of America and Superman Batman all pre flashpoint. Being honest that was my favourite run.
