Review: Bloodborne #14

STORY

This week I got a book from indie publisher Titan Comics with this book and I’ve got to some its quite something. From the much needed info blurd proceeding the story you learn that Bloodborne is set in a city called Yharnam, an ancient and hother metropolis which is the home of the Healing Church. While the church is known for its blood based curative the city has suffered a recent plague known as the Ashen Blood. This is a world of god, monsters and nightmare twists of reality one man is in seatch of the truth of his situation.

This book plays out in ways of non linear movies like Memento or Pulp fiction. Our Narrator, who is an unreliable narrator, is falling in and out of points of view and time as if he were the protagonist of Slaughterhouse Five. He is aware that he is hallucinating to some degree but it is unknown how much is memory and how much metaphor and how much is truth. Its a fascinating journey for those willing to take the time to unravel it and who appreciates a slow burn of a read, and you will need these qualities given that the issue gives you no context outside of the info blurb proceeding the story. While you might not be able to understand everything going on in this issue, not having read the previous issues, but you should be able to pick up what’s going on in part before the end. There are lots of little clues ablong the way as there should be with any good mystery and the final reveal can be shocking if you don’t see it coming.

It is for certain an interesting story with its many layers, broken narrative structure and a Narrator who is not reasonably lucid in the story. While the story felt complete in the telling, it feels short in the reading with there being less than twentyy pages of actual storytelling in this comic. While I depreciate the dream logic and play and other surreal factors I find myself disturbed that comics are getting shorter and shorter in length and yet costing more and more. Its unforgivable in my book and the industry deserves better. Its a real shame because its a fascinating read.

ART

The art in this book is splendid. The artwork is sumptuously detailed, exquisitely well rendered and gorgeously colored. I really can’t say enough about the art. It completely fits the story and it perfectly illustrates the story. The pages are laid out in a classically European way and in fact the entire book reminds me of the sort of thing I would find in the pages of Heavy Metal.

FINAL THOUGHTS

This book is very intriguing and should really attract the attention of anyone interested in something outside of the superhero genre. 4 out of 5!
