Review: Catagory Zero #2

Synopsis:

In issue one we were introduced to the main characters of Professor Higgs who was one of the one-percenters. All humans are infected with the Strix virus but only one percent of human beings have the gene which activates said virus. Apparently, some people can control the symptoms of the virus and others can’t. Professor Higgs is apparently quarantined in a type of security base. his wife, Sarah, is not a one-percenter so she is still a resident of the city and a school teacher. A one-percenter accidentally destroyed a bank, and now the public is up in arms over the damage that one-percenters can cause.

The Creative Team:

Adem Kimmel opens this issue with the public backlash to the destruction of the bank in the previous issue. The military base that houses Professor Biggs is on lockdown. I am enjoying this series for its realism and unpredictability. We can empathize with these characters and their emotions are real to us. After the news story, Kimmel takes us to city hall where the politicians are discussing their options. Some of them are convinced that it was some kind of terrorist attack. The story unfolds the way you would expect the citizens and their government would respond if it were to happen in today’s society. Great stuff includes the conversation between one doctor and a kid that tests positive. Also, the isolation that the kids who tested positive go through as they are separated from their classmates.

Ton Lima continues with his gritty down to earth style which elevates the story and helps ground this tale in a sober relatable world. When we see government officials, some of them armed, surround the local High School it gives us a slight chill to realize that this could happen to any school in any city. Highlights include the final fate of the security compound and the final splash which raises more questions than it answers.

In Conclusion:

This series just keeps getting better as we’re drawn into the difficult decisions that have to be made concerning the one-percenters. Kimmel and Lima are a great comic book producing team and this series tackles some very mature situations. The series is not for the squeamish and it’s an enjoyable read from start to finish. **** (9.2 rating)
