REVIEW: Chew #52

Chew #52
Written & lettered by John Layman
Drawn & Coloured by Rob Guillory

Let’s judge this book by its cover…. Grubs up, but it doesn’t look too appetising. I’m a big fan of this style of artwork. The not too serious but not too cartoony look is great.

52 issues in you’d think I’d be lost… Well this book shows you how to draw in new readers by being so easy to get into that it feels like a first issue.

So the world has been ravaged by bird flu and it doesn’t look like it was natural. in the wake, with no choice but to ban poultry from being consumed, the government has created a new special task force, on this team are several ‘Cibopaths’ people that have the ability to get psychic impressions from whatever they ingest. However they do have one weakness, one food that renders their ability null and void… Persimmon. There are also a few other types of Cibopaths with abilities like eating makes them stronger. Now they must figure out who released the bird flu and why they wanted to ban the consumption of poultry around the world.

What a great book, the idea of how these people get powers did make me chuckle but it’s so unique I loved it.

The art is fantastic and the humour, though subtle is very well written. Overall this is a strong book and so newbie friendly. 4 stars for a great book and i might have to go back and check out earlier stories.

Hey, I'm Shane.
Been into comics since I was about 5. Loved watching Wonder Woman and superboy in the 80's.
I Started reading seriously about 10 years ago. Began to collect a few comic series, Wonder Woman, Supergirl, Batgirl, Teen Titans, Justice League of America and Superman Batman all pre flashpoint. Being honest that was my favourite run.
