Behind a fetching pink robe cover, lies the third issue of Mark Millar’s and Sean Gordon Murphy’s time travelling/time destroying/ time hopping duo. Â And this time, it seems welcomes are being worn out.
I have read good things about the book and I have to say I am not disappointed. The script is energetic and the pacing is frenetic. The various time hops and the recklessness by which they are conducted add to the pace as well as generating most of the humour.
Murphy’s art looks great throughout with a style that is reminiscent of Klaus Janson, albeit, a little sharper and less rough. I do have to say, just so you know I love Janson’s work, so the comparison is meant as a compliment. The structure of the panels on page also conveys the pace.
Millar  has a bit of a reputation of deconstructing a genre, see Kick Ass for example, and then putting them back together in a unique fashion. Chrononauts is no exception. Time travel is going through a bit of a renaissance at the moment, whether it’s Doctor Who or Ivar, Time Walker. Either way, now is the best opportunity to turn the genre on its head.
Back to the story, like some crazy, no need to refuel version of the DeLorean, the duo visit some key points in history. Being a Dolphins fan, I kinda hoped they had run over Nameth, but I won’t hold it against them. The visit to Dallas is also fun, as is the Ben Hur scenes. And it’s from these scenes that you forget all the damages these two can cause, whilst you are actually watching the damage. This is by now means a mean feat. When we should be shaking our heads shouting “you can’t do that!”, we instead smiling at the time-anarchy.
So, there you have it. A fun, truly laugh out loud book with great art. What more could you ask for?

I am a long time comic book fan, being first introduced to Batman in the mid to late 70's. This led to a appreciation of classic artists like Neal Adams and Jim Aparo. Moving through the decades that followed, I have a working knowledge of a huge raft of characters with a fondness for old school characters like JSA and The Shadow
Currently reading a slew of Bat Books, enjoying a mini Marvel revival, and the host of The Definative Crusade and Outside the Panels whilst also appearing on No-Prize Podcast on the Undercover Capes Podcast Network
