Review: Conan The Slayer #11

Cullen Bunn was put on Earth to write Conan. It“s a good thing for all of us he has penned Conan The Slayer with the ferocity of a barbaric swordsman. The Devil in Iron story arc has been classic Conan through and through. In Conan The Slayer Issue 11, (part five of The Devil in Iron story arc) we find the Hyborian warrior and his companion Octavia, on the island of Xapur, within an ancient forest city, which is rumored to be cursed and haunted. The warrior Agha and his followers are trying to lay a trap to destroy Conan, but in the process, draw the rage of an ancient evil in the form of Khosatral Khel, a demonic giant who has been awakened and threatens to destroy everything in his path.

The entire arc has been really amazing as it has provided nonstop action and traditional Conan swagger. Dark Horse Comics has truly done a tremendous job of keeping this brand alive and fresh, while appealing to fans from ages gone by. They have put in place a creative team who truly understand the characters and know the audience. Writer Cullen Bunn has done a masterful job of keeping classic elements of Conan alive, while creating new and interesting stories. I hope he has the opportunity to stay with this book for some time, so we can continue to be treated to his vision, which is poised to create new classics in the long line of Conan creativity.

Artist Sergio Davila and Michael Atiyeh, who provides the color do tremendous justice to the story with a vivid artistic vision that once again classic Conan. Recognizable characterizations that are still fresh and vibrant complete the circle that was started by the strong writing.

If you“ve ever been a fan of Conan, either the books or either of the movies, this will appeal to you. If you are looking for a good jumping on point, I would recommend starting with issue 7 in this series and working up to this current issue 11. The warrior spirit is alive and well with this book and I expect this to only continue with the tremendous creative team in place. Conan, as a character is pure heavy metal. The unwavering action and bravado of this story do justice to such a character. Long may the king reign.
