Review: Daredevil Through Hell #12 (Part 2)
“You should call your collection of businesses ‘the untouchables'” – Tyrone
Synopsis:
Wilson Fisk is trying to bring some of his dealings to the light, but other crime bosses aren’t playing nice. They don’t want to let Fisk do his thing. The Stromwym family is planning a special dinner and Mr. Fisk needs to clean house beforehand. Meanwhile, Matt Murdock is struggling with life after Daredevil. His former partner Elektra is trying to convince him that he needs her training to get his skills back up to what they once were. While he’s hanging out with his best friend, Foggy Nelson, Murdock discovers someone else that needs saving…Daredevil!
The Creative Team:
Chris Zdarsky opens this issue with our hero getting roughed up by some corrupt cops. But salvation is just around the corner as his lawyer arrives and bluffs his way into talking the phony defenders of justice into letting DD go. It’s a tense moment that serves as an intriguing open for an above par issue. I enjoyed the back and forth scenarios between Matt Murdock and Wilson Fisk. We’re kept guessing as to what will happen next and to who the new Daredevil really is. Great stuff includes seeing Matt Murdock in action outside of his Daredevil persona and Wilson Fisks dancing around his mob connections as he dines with one of the most ruthless crime families in Hell’s Kitchen.
Marco Chcchetto nails the feel for Hell’s Kitchen and brings these characters into a world of darkness on all sides. His New York is on par with DC’s Gotham as a scary place to live and the characters exhibit the right balance between fear and toughness. Highlights include Matt Murdock’s rooftop battle and the final splash of this issue.
In Conclusion:
This issue dishes out a violent series that is befitting of the man without fear. A neo-noir style tale that keeps everyone on their toes. Foggy proves himself capable of facing danger without flinching and Wilson Fisk’s deals get shadier. This new “Daredevil” is obviously not able to deal with the hazards of vigilantism in the deepest depths of corruption that is Hell’s Kitchen. Elektra is on hand to give Matt the proper pep talk, but will Matt accept his fate as the protector of Hell’s Kitchen? to be continued! (*** 1/2, 8.7)
