REVIEW: DC Comics: Anatomy of a Metahuman
The awesome folks over at Insight Editions had hit us up to take a look at their latest release, DC Comics: Anatomy of a Metahuman. The book is an over-sized edition with a beautiful cover, with art by Ming Doyle written by S.D. Perry and Matthew Manning. Batman is one sick dude! That’s my first impression of this book once I took a peek inside. This is like looking through the notes for the infamous tale Tower of Babel. When they say Batman preps, it is no joke!
This is a dossier on DC’s Top Heroes and Villains as written by Batman himself, check out who is covered in this dossier, each entry is between 10 and 20 pages long, with the Man of Steel“s stretching to 22.:
- Superman.
- The Cheetah.
- Aquaman.
- Cyborg.
- Martian Manhunter.
- Swamp Thing.
- Darkseid.
- Bane.
- Doomsday.
- Killer Croc.
- Bizarro.
- Killer Frost.
Each page is a like a journal entry, with not only a description of how a characters power might work but also little notes from Bruce himself, reminding him to dig deeper into particular topics. There are several reminders to investigate ways of combating meta-human abilities so as to best defeat them in a fight and even implement them somehow for his own use. There are also additional documents, secret letters, and reports pasted or clipped into the journal (drawn to appear that way).
Author’s S.D. Perry and Matthew Manning really got into the character for this book, the explanations, the details and notes all made for a very real look into the mind of The Batman. The art by Ming Doyle is on point! the detailed imagery of characters anatomy looked like something Leonardo Da Vinci would’ve dived into. It is gorgeous! This team definitely brought something unique to comic fans with this book!
At the very end of the book has a list of names for further study, including Wonder Woman and The Flash. Looks like we may have a follow-up journal. Based on the strength of this one, I sincerely hope there is. I thoroughly enjoyed this very unique way to look at the characters of the DCU. This is a fantastic addition to your coffee table decorations for geek conversation!
