Review: Deadpool #10
Kelly Thompson is the perfect Deadpool writer. She creates the perfect balance of humor and destruction. While this issue’s trope of gathering a new team is clearly an homage of the films it is done with such destructive humor that it’s the rare comic that actually makes you laugh out loud.
As will all the best Deadpool books the fourth wall comes crashing down, the characters are all insane, but the stakes are also massive and the story has real resonance to the larger arc. Here Deadpool enjoys the relative safety of being part of a larger crossover as he fights the Venomous forces attacking the Marvel Universe as part of the King in Black crossover.
Since Deadpool now rules over an island of monstrous heroes and villains he pulls together his ideal team. This includes a land-walking mini-shark, a snowman, a monster with a light coming from its mouth, a fish monster, Sauron and Elsa Bloodstone among many others. There is also a cult pronouncing Deadpool’s imminent demise, and when he survives they simply shift their prediction by a year.
There is a massive battle with a symbiote Dragon which showcases some solid art and of course finds an excuse for Deadpool to cut off his own arm. The humor and pacing doesn’t slow down a bit as we get Deadpool’s final plan, using a gelatinous creature named Jelby to beat back and finally contain the Dragon. This issue is layered with so much humor and action that it’s a perfect crossover issue to draw in new readers.
Except somehow this is the last issue of the run, showing just how pointless Marvel makes crossovers by not even allowing them to build momentum and an audience for their books. They’re continually resetting books rather than letting a run as fun as this find a larger audience. More than anything this book proves just how great a writer Kelly Thompson is. Even if this crossover can’t find more fans for this run it’ll certainly create some new fans for Kelly Thompson.
