If you“ve been following along, Shiva and the League of Shadows have placed a city ending bomb in place. All the cards are stacked, although with our Batman team down but not out, through the rally of one Cassandra Cain aka Orphan, who in the previous issue just took down an army of the league of shadows (yes go back and read issue 955, you’re welcome) she leads the new battered charge of our Bat-heroes! Shivia, now alone and outnumbered is not one for surrender or retreat as we are very well know and attacks head on. What conspires next words do no justice for. A review can“t capture this comic. The very soul of Cassandra awakening to her own self-realization is just moving. Standing up for her friends against a murderous mother that she is torn between loving and hating. Mr. Tynion IV has out done himself on this one. It felt like I was down in that sewer with my shins covered in crappy sewage water, watching one of the most epic fights on a physical and emotional level.
Kate“s father reaching deeper into a father“s madness to protect his daughter, Clayface to the rescue, emotional turmoil is an understatement for this issue as it slams home on the mental emotional spectrum. Some undiscovered lanterns somewhere in space are crying right now. With a close call ending, an optimistic realization and another crazy case introduced by the Batman himself, this comic will leave you drooling for more if you have not started already.
Orphan is one of my favorite comic characters now because of this storyline and I hope we see more to come. Detective Comics Rebirth style is something new but familiar at the same time. It feels like Gotham city in a comic. The art, the writing and even the colors that splash over every page creating the ever evolving city that we all know and love. The current Bat-family of Batman, Batwoman, Azrael, Batwing, Orphan, and Clayface quench my bat-habit. I hope you readers like Bat-puns! This Rebirth direction has been nothing but comic genius at work and it has been one hell of a ride since the beginning. An ending and beginning metaphor in comic form to describe the very circle of life we all get scars from.
I wanted to spoil this whole comic in this review but I actually went back and read it again in the middle of writing this and knew in my comic heart that I couldn“t do it. The whole League of Shadows arc has been gripping. I wanted to, in overly exciting fanboy mode, go through each panel of this comic and tell you between deep breaths how dope this book is. Hopefully you“ve been reading along with the Detective Comics storyline and hopefully you“ve already gotten in your Batmobile or Batcopter and are now speeding your way to the comic book store. Detective Comics #956 gets five stars out of five stars!!
