REVIEW: DUNGEONS & DRAGONS LEGENDS OF BALDUR’S GATE #3

Writer: Jim Zub
Artist: Max Dunbar
Publisher: IDW Publishing
Release Date: 12/10/2014

Jim Zub and Max Dunbar continue the revival of one of gaming“s most beloved franchises with issue 3 of this series from IDW.

I am going to start off this review by stating how much of a fan of the games (well the PC versions anyway) I am and how excited I was when this series was announced. Jim Zub does not disappoint giving us an insanely fun read that allows you step back into the world of the Forgotten Realms once more. This issue concerns our intrepid adventurers crashing a party one of the nicer parts of the city, as you can imagine things quickly go awry leading into a daring rooftop battle with a the overall plot moving nicely. The star of this book is quite clearly Minsc, Zub really does get this character down to a tee and he feels just like he did in the game, catchphrases and hamster intact. Allowing for plenty of laughs and much butt kickery of evil Minsc is a force of nature in this book and his presence is clearly felt in every panel that he is in.

Dunbar“s art brings the world we all know and love to light his intricate character designs, especially on some the new characters where he is less restrained in looks are absolutely beautiful and fit the world of the Forgotten Realms perfectly. Everything in this issue is so animated that the action scenes and character expressions leap off the page and really make you feel as if you are looking at the game from a different angle.

If you are a fan of DnD, or the games themselves you owe it to yourselves to pick up this book. The creative team clearly get the characters and are clearly having a great amount of fun writing this book. It reads more like an adventure pack for DnD and that is by no means a bad thing, if you have played the game you find the characters making the laugh out loud choices even the most serious gaming group would make and it quickly allows you to warm to the characters and join in on the fun.
