Review: Eugenic #3

At what point does the price of peace and conformity become too high? If humanity had to sell off its art, creativity and curiosity to get peace, is that a fair choice? And what if it came down to one person making that choice for everyone?

Those are the questions James Tynion IV and Eryk Donovan have been asking throughout the Eugenic books and they come to a head in this, the final chapter. The Numans have had 400 years of peace, but at the cost of humanity“s creativity and sense of wonder. They have preserved their predecessors arts, but they have little interest in them and don“t understand them.

Unlike the previous two series that make up Tynion (Batman, Detective Comics) and Donovan“s (Quantum Teens Are Go, Big Trouble In Little China) Apocalyptic Trilogy, each issue of Eugenic takes place several generations apart from each other. Where Memetic and Cognetic took place over very short spans, this series dipped into this very strange and very new (but not quite brave) world giving readers a broader view of the society created by our replacements.

Most of the numans presented in the book, don“t want to face these questions and don“t want to deal with the questions that the art left behind by humanity delves into. Are they just shallow? Is this part of their edited genetics? In the end, what impact will humanity leave behind its 20,000 year run? Despite all the big questions the book poses, it does manage to bring this and the whole Apocalyptic Trilogy to a satisfying close.

Tynion and Donovan certainly pack a lot of punch into their comics and this is no exception. If you like comics that really convey big ideas that will be churning in the back of your head all day, this is the book you want to read. Andy while this book serves as a definitive end to all three series, they have left themselves wiggle room to come back in for another look.
