Review: Extremity # 10

Synopsis:

This story Is coming to an end with only two more issues to go. It’s been an exciting ride and this issue opens with our heroes debating weather or not to turn on a device which could help, or destroy, them. They’re not sure what action to take. But there’s no time to waste as the Panzini are hot on their tails. An action packed opening that promises to deliver the goods in this issue. Their decision (which I won’t reveal here) is made in haste. But is necessary to ensure their survival.

The Creative Team:

Daniel Warren Johnson the writer: Johnson knows how to build suspense with his words. He gives this issue the action most comic book readers crave and he delivers in style. Amidst the chaos we see Thea and Rollo conflicted about their Father. Is he a villain or simply doing what it takes to survive? A little subplot to help keep the action interesting as the reader is forced to decide who to root for in the convoluted mess that Johnson has crafted in this battle to keep his characters on their toes. It’s great stuff that should keep readers glued to each page. Johnson takes us to unexpected places in this chapter as the wonderment of this world continues to impress. One of the things about good science fiction writing is that the planet itself is a character in the story and this planet is filled with wonders that you won’t find on earth.

Daniel Warren Johnson the artist: Rarely does one find a writer that’s equally good as an artist, but in Johnson that rarity has come to life, he is one of the exceptions that proves the rule, along with Frank Miller, Jack Kirby and a few other chosen ones. His art is reminiscent, though not derivative of, Joe Kubert. And this is good, I haven’t seen good Kubert style art since…well, Joe Kubert. “…That“s what it“s all about. Being a cartoonist is being able to tell a story in a graphic form. I don“t care how pretty your pictures are, if you“re not telling a story with those pictures, you“re not a cartoonist.”“Â – Joe Kubert. (The art of Joe Kubert: ISBN 1606994875 (ISBN13: 9781606994870) and Johnson is telling a great story with his graphics in this tale. His battle scenes are built up panel to panel, his landscapes and building structures are unique, though with notable influences from historic sites, to the future world he has created and his art greatly enhances his words with each page. This tale is sure to become a classic!

In Conclusion:

I don’t see many great sci-fi original comics out there anymore, most of what is there is adapted from either movies or novels. As a comic book and science fiction fan I yearn for the time when Space Opera was one of the norms in comic book format, Flash Gordon, Buck Rogers, Planet comics et al. Now, thanks to Image bringing us a diversity of titles and stretching out to avoid repetitive story telling and age-old comic clichÃ©s, titles like this can bring some diversity to the realm of comic books. The end of this issue has one of the protagonists (no spoilers) contemplating what has gone on and realizes that he might be fighting on the wrong side. A dramatic arc that will leave fans of this title wanting the next issue now! ****1/2 (9.3 rating)
