Review: Flash Annual #2

Synopsis:

It’s all in the speedster family as a good chunk of DC’s Speedsters show up, but not all of them are on the up and up. Every family has its dark sheep. Some are hell-bent on disrupting the family dynamic. And something bad has happened at Sanctuary. An important member of the team is…Let’s just say…in dire straights (no spoilers.)

The Creative Team:

Joshua Williamson brings a feeling of helplessness to Barry Allen. This is a must have issue as one of our speedsters has gone rogue and another has faced a no win scenario. There’s a flood of different emotions as the entire speed force has to face a great loss. All the while one of their own is on some inexplicable mission to gather up something for a being not identified in this issue. It’s never clear what he’s doing but it has something to do with touching his fellow speedsters with a gauntlet. The repercussions of his actions are so strong that we have two epilogs to deal with this situation. The reader is lured in to this intriguing tale because they will want to know who has animosity towards the speedsters and can it really be true that one of them has left us? Great stuff includes Bart Allen’s introduction and a poignant moment between Barry and Iris as we see their world view challenged by the incidents of this issue.

Scott Collins illustrations are perfect for Barry and company. His panels are fast paced as you would expect for a Flash title and his heroic poses are perfect for a DC superhero issue. There’s one point where impulse is searching for the other speedsters and Collins illustrates it with so many fast paced versions of impulse it will make you dizzy. Highlights include Impulses battle with this issues antagonist and the moment where Barry and Iris hug each other as they come to grips with the bad news they received from the sanctuary.

In Conclusion:

This issue tears at our heart-strings as we look at the speedsters losses in this issue. It hints at crossover with other titles like Teen Titans and Young Justice and the story promises that it will be continued…but not just in the next issue of Flash. It will take some time to get the entire story so the creative team must have something real big conjured up over the next few months. Godspeeds actions put the power in play in a strong way and we don’t learn who has hired him to gather all of the speedsters forces. We are truly stumped as to who has been trying to take…something from our heroes and we’re never quite sure as to what he’s actually taken. We finally see who’s been wanting the characters life force as we… to be continued. **** (8.8 rating)
