Review: Friendly Neighborhood Spider-Man #13
“Science Five!” – Reed Richards and Peter Parker.
Synopsis:
This issue opens with Spidey and the F.F. meeting with the daughter of the Dictator or Under York, Leilani along with her children Jasper and Tierra. The Wall-Crawler isn’t very happy with Leilani’s father since he tried to have our hero killed. Leilani assures the web-slinger that he will keep trying since he challenged the Under York leader and humiliated him in public. Then the team jumps aboard the elevator to Under York and takes the elevator ride from hell as the conveyer plummets downward. No one ever said that getting to Under York would be easy!
The Creative Team:
Tom Taylor shows us a megalomaniac at his worst and most insane. When he perceives a threat to his power from our heroes he goes after his own daughter and commands his citizens to obey a curfew and anyone who is caught on the streets will be banned from society. He’s even willing to take his own daughter’s life, and if he can’t rule the city he is more than willing to destroy it. It’s an enjoyable read as our heroes discover just how crazy this petty little tyrant has become. Great stuff includes the teamwork it took to thwart the plans of Leilani’s father and the citizens of Underworld discovering the truth about their fearless leader. Some great light-hearted moments ensue that we come to expect from Marvel’s first family.
Lashley, Nauck, Guara, and Ruan are this issues fantastic four of illustration and they deliver superbly. Even if they did forget Reed’s beard on one panel, lol. We all make mistakes. But their panels keep this issue zipping along. The elevator ride is a delight as our heroes get all shook up in the experience highlights include the joy on Jasper and Tierra’s faces as they great these iconic characters and Tess’ first appearance in this tale.
In Conclusion:
This is a feel-good issue as we see this team performing at their best. Johnny’s frustration shines forth as Reed and Spidey guide him into taking apart a deadly weapon of mass destruction. This is a pleasant conclusion to the proceedings and the Under Yorkers get their comeuppance in a nice way. A satisfactory reading experience.
