Review: Future Quest #11 â€“ The Herculoids

I“ve recently mentioned how enjoyable the Hanna-Barbera comics, published by DC, have been for me. The recent issue of Future Quest Presents, starring one of my childhood favorites, The Herculoids, is no exception.

In a classic tale of not knowing what you want until you get it, Dorno has been transformed into a God and turned into an adult by his new friend Animan. He now possesses the ability to travel across the galaxy, and pretty much do whatever he wants. The problem with this is he“s without his family and friends, and he misses their home planet of Amzot more than he ever would have imagined. Now he only needs to find a way to outsmart Animan to make everything right.
Artist Aaron Lopresti, along with Inker Matt Ryan, Colorist Hi-Fi, and Letterer Carlos M. Mangual provide a beautiful book for this story to be told within. Hi-Fi is, and has been for years, an amazing colorist who should be considered the industry standard. While the entire book is gorgeous, I really want to bring attention to the first several pages where Dorno and Animan are traveling through space. The depth of these panels made me feel as if I could reach into the book and touch the passing planets and stars. It“s comic art in its highest form.

The art is matched by the story penned by Rob Williams. In what could be a coming of age tale for Dorno, we find a richness that was never truly explored in the original TV series. He has always wanted to prove himself, and in this comic, he finally discovers that being present and not rushing the future is really the best choice. When given the opportunity to work in the classic Hanna-Barbera world, the DC writers have not only done them justice, they have made readers care about them more than I would have expected.

Fans of the original Saturday morning cartoon should truly enjoy this comic book. If not for anything else, you“ll get to see Gloop and Gleep again, which is AMAZING! I recommend it not only for the tremendous art, but for the proper story this long ignored classic franchise is getting. I hope to see more of The Herculoids in the coming months. They still have my attention.
