Review: GAME OF THRONES CLASH OF KINGS #11
This issue opens with Bran riding into town while the crowd cheers. Of course, Bran knows that they’re not cheering for him! But he still feels good to be at the center of the attention. Bran has come back to a victory celebration of epic proportions and he’s been invited to dine with royalty. It’s a feast unlike anything he’s ever enjoyed in his entire life. After this epic feast, Bran will learn something about his past and recall words of wisdom from his father.
The Creative Team:
Landry Q. Walker makes adapting George R.R. Martin look easy. And yet we know that it couldn’t have been that easy! He brings Bran from a point of high expectations and soaring emotions to pondering something his father told him about the knighthood years ago. Bran is so bent on becoming a Knight that even after the feast it’s all that’s on his mind. Every sound he hears in the night seems to be a reflection of his desire to acquire that noble profession. Great stuff includes one of the elders telling Bran that he’ll become a Lord one day only to have Bran snap back at him that he wants to be a Knight. Also Jon’s coming to the realization that a fight is about to brew!
Mel Ruby captures the feel of Martin’s characters and the medieval era they’re set in quite well. The art is fantastic and even emotes the HBO series. I always get a sense of Prince Valiant within these pages. Hal Foster or Gray Morrow’s style seems to be evoked here in a good way. Bringing us back to those glorious days of yesteryear.
In Conclusion:
Both Bran and Jon go through an introspective period where they learn a lot about themselves and their relation to the kingdom. And the climax of this issue promises a big battle in the coming issues as our hero’s have to deal with the ever changing surroundings of their kingdom. These comics are a worthy companion to both Martin’s novels and the HBO series. **** (8.9 rating)
