Review: Gamma Flight #3
Story Thus far:
In the previous issue of Gamma Flight #2, Creel was damaged by Skaar during a struggle to restrain and transport a new mutate named Dionne. The damage sent Creel near Nuclear and appeared to disintegrate everybody. In the current issue, it turns out that Gama Flight and Dionne were transported to an unfamiliar place, Thomasville Texas.
The good news is the Dionne is familiar with the place, but only because that is the HQ to Project Green Spring. The bad news is that the Thomasville is full of very hostile creatures trying to tear them apart. That includes what I am sure is the first appearance of Gamma Zombies. Close to the source of all the mayhem is a secret that puts Dionne in a different light.
Art:
Action packed, yet sufficiently creepy. Up front and center for Gamma Flight is the Monstrosity and often ugliness behind their powers. The character here are designed to display depth of narrative, and not to sell toys and I’m here for it.
Script:
Honestly, by itself it is a solid issue, but the dialogue falls under the weight of all the great work Al Ewing has been putting into reconstructing the monster that is the Hulk and His world. But alas it does some things nicely. It closes the chapter on Reginald Fortean. It’s a smooth introduction to part of the story for Dionne.
SCORE: 4 Out of 5 Stars.
Speculation:
Alpha Flight is a project that has been rumored to be in the works by Marvel Studios. The complexity of how it would fit into the MCU, could be too tough to handle cinematically. A series on Disney+ would be interesting and of course a Gamma Flight adaption would be amazing.
The tough part is pinning down where to speculate . There is a bunch of gold hidden in the back bins. Alpha Flight 1st appearance (X-MEN VOL #120). Eugene aka Puck (Alpha Flight #1, 1983). “Mary MacPherran aka Ttiania (Marvel Superheroes Secret Wars #3 1984). Leornard Samson aka DOC (Incredible Hulk #141, 1971).
Harshly overlooked by current speculation markets, would be Dionne Fortean (Gamma Flight #1). I’ll admit there have been several Gamma Mutates (remember Weapon H?), but the emotional tie-in could be something interesting to keep an eye on.
