When I was a kid I loved the Goosebumps books that’s really what kind of introduced me to horror when I was a kid
if I borrowed one of those Goosebumps books from the library I was not getting to sleep that night they gave me a weird tingly feeling on my skin. So it was with pleasure that I got to review Goosebumps Horrors Of The Witch House #3, written by Denton J. Tipton and Matthew Dow Smith .
In the previous issue of Goosebumps Horrors Of The Witch House #2, the kids in town Rosie, Becca, and Carlos go to investigated noises coming from a notoriously haunted house, the old Whaley House. They don’t necessarily find any ghost, but they do find Veruca Curry the recent owner of the house, oh and she’s a witch, and she owns a stone gargoyle brought to life by Veruca“s dark magic.
In the current issue of Goosebumps Horrors Of The Witch House #3 Rosie, Becca, and Carlos wake up on the couch in the living room of the old Whaley House to find Veruca and the stone gargoyle standing over them offering tea, and friendship. She offers it to them because she figures that she is going to need non mind controlled friends, after she starts the world domination spell. Rosie, Becca, and Carlos, do their best to resist and save the day.
Witch House #3 seemed a little out of flavor for Goosebumps probably because of my rule “without a great villain, there are no great heroes. When I think about what makes a well-crafted villain, I often think about how often I come away from reading a book, those was some awesome stuff from the hero, but the villain had a point. Usually we“re always on the villains“ side because villains want to change the status quo & the status quo sucks. But the status quo throughout the book seems to be that grownups suck and should not be trusted.
All in all this issue was missing the Goosebump spine tingly feel. I really feel that the whole story could have been told in one issue. That being said the issue is still well together, and the art is pretty good for a book targeted at a younger audience. If your kid has $20 to spend on comic books these week this is still in my top 5 must grab.
The Witch House #3 will arrive with two covers; the Cover A Regular, was drawn by Chris Fenoglio; the Cover B is was a retailer incentive drawn by Megan Levens, colors by Leonardo Ito Variant Cover and was capped of as 1:10.
