REVIEW: Gotham Academy #9

Gotham Academy #9
Writers – Becky Cloonan & Brendon Fletcher
Art – Karl Kerschl
Colours – Serge Lapointe & Msassyk

Let’s judge this book by its cover… The cover is drawn simply and clean. Plain green background with a shadow of a wolfs head while the five school kids look ready for some monster hunting. The art is better then the covers overall look.

The facts are these… Without a recap I’m jumping in blind. Let’s see if I can follow it form here. Bare with me.

If you’re sitting comfortably we can begin… Olive is alone in the woods reading a note when Maps and the rest of her friends show up to investigate the attack of a fellow student. They find some animal hair and analyse it to discover it’s wolf hair. The team jump to the conclusion that it was a werewolf attack and head back to campus to make a plan. While everyone is coming up with the plan Olive finds her school records and discovers her mother was a costumes villain named Calamity. Asking the head teacher for the truth he informs her that she and another student were excepted into the academy to be watched over. The other student is the young man attacked by the wolf in the woods Tristan. Olive and maps go to see him for answers when the werewolf attacks them. Tristan in actually a Man-Bat and transforms to fight back. They manage to chase off the werewolf and head to set a trap leaving Olive alone in the woods when the wolf attacks. Olive is taken over by some evil force that tells her to burn down the wolf and then the school as a fire surrounds her. The wolf is taken down by a tranq with an antidote as he turns back into the schools coach. Back at the academy Olive is with her friend and see’s the evil force again as a stage bursts into flame.

This book is very Scooby Doo’ish. School kids hunting monsters. It looks like the main girl has some powers or maybe will have them soon. The books had good pacing and kept me interested. Can’t fault it for what it is. The art is great and the story was really well written.

That’ll leave a mark… No real violence in this one. Some action scenes no blood or death. It’s not childish it’s just family friendly.

The Good, the Bad and the Star rating…
The Good – story and art both great.
The Bad – without a recap I felt a little lost with who’s who.
The Stars – for a ghost hunter book it’s not bad. I’ll give it 3 stars.

Hey, I'm Shane.
Been into comics since I was about 5. Loved watching Wonder Woman and superboy in the 80's.
I Started reading seriously about 10 years ago. Began to collect a few comic series, Wonder Woman, Supergirl, Batgirl, Teen Titans, Justice League of America and Superman Batman all pre flashpoint. Being honest that was my favourite run.
