Review: Green Arrow #38

Writer Benjamin Percy and Artist Juan Ferreyra have been an outstanding team on the Green Arrow (DC Comics) title in the Rebirth era. Percy has written every issue (please correct me if I’m wrong) while Ferreyra has been the artist on about half of the titles run. This 38th installment in the series will be the last issue for this team, and they do not disappoint with their final chapter in The Fall of Red Arrow story line.

As Oliver Queen is on trial for murder, and gives one of the best courtroom speeches since, well”¦. ever, the ninth circle is still trying to retain control over his family“s business. With a little help from his friends, the fashionable playboy is able to present the truth to the jury of his peers and make sure their long-lived diabolical plan is exposed to the light of day.

Make no mistake, Percy is a masterful storyteller. The passion that is written into the voice of Oliver Queen is unmistakably the sound of a generation who is tired of the status quo. It“s the voice of unbridled justice that has finally come up for air after being held back for so long. The voice of true freedom. I“m a fan of the world Mr. Queen wants to create.

As always, Ferreyra delivers his customary solid world building artwork. I loved the suit Oliver was wearing in court and the facial expression of his lawyer when he addressed the court was priceless.

Green Arrow is without a doubt a character who is trying to make the world a better place. He is not perfect, and you may consider him damaged, but his heart is in the right place. This series has done a good job of selling him as a social justice warrior. He simply tries to fix the sins of his family“s past.
I“m looking forward to where this series will take us in the coming months, but I do want to pause and say thank you to Benjamin Percy and Juan Ferreyra for the amazing work they“ve done over the last couple of years to add their fingerprints to the rich history of this character. Thank you both.
