If you“ve been following my reviews on this site, you will no doubt know by now that Zenescope“s Grimm Tales of Terror is one of my favorite series out today (aside from anything Valiant puts out, of course).
For those of you who may be new to the series, it is a horror anthology book with each story only taking place in one issue, and always having a sinister twist. In many ways, it reminds me of series like The Twilight Zone or the Outer Limits but with a horror focus; I guess Tales from the Crypt would be the closest counterpart. Grimm Tales of Terror always manages to take urban legends or horror tales and give them a very modern feel which I definitely appreciate, and having each story be contained within a single issue definitely provides a great jumping point for new readers anywhere along the series.
In issue 9, Preciada gives us a story of love gone awry, as two lovers on the run from their parents come upon an apparently abandoned gas station. There, they discover that a crazed lunatic has escaped a mental asylum and is on the loose. As the man is murdered at the hands of the hooked lunatic, the girl manages to escape to the local police precinct, only to encounter the killer himself – and he is definitely not who you might think.
What always sets the Zenescope books apart is the incredible art talent which always manages to have a fairly uniform look even as multiple artists jump within a book. Eleonora Carlini“s work in this issue is terrific, further amplifying the frantic atmosphere of this story with dynamic panel work and polished pencils. In particular, I enjoyed the car chase scene into the precinct and those last few panels of the story which really upped the creep factor just as the story drew to its conclusion.
Grimm Tales of Terror #9 is another great addition to the growing Zenescope line, and a fine example of horror comics done right. If you“re not reading this book yet, you are really missing out on one of the most genuinely exciting and scary books being published today.
