REVIEW: Gwenpool Holiday Special

STORY BY Gerry Duggan, Charles Soule, Christopher Hastings, Margaret Stohl , Gerry Duggan
ART BY Langdon Foss, Juan Gedeon, Danilo S. Beyruth, Gurihiru

Hey, I have a great idea, lets take two popular foods and because we think EVERYONE loves them, we will able to charge a whopping $5.99 for it and EVERYONE will be happy!

So here is mint chocolate chip curried ice-cream! Any takers?

So maybe my idea isn’t great, but at least we have Marvel ready to force feed us Gwen Stacy and Deadpool, which they are sure everyone will love.

Now, I have gone through this book a few times and I have to say, I can not find any redeemable content.  The style of the art, a cartoony effect that “lends” itself to comedy coupled with a “humorous”  script that doesn’t bring the funny is not my idea of anything special.

One of the things that is wrong with the Big Two, is that they both over promote their popular characters.  The racks are already bursting at the seems with mutant books or Bat books of various quality.  Fans will say that these characters deserve to have lots of different books. I am a huge Batman fan, however I would like to see more quality books than a glut of poor quality books.  In reality, substandard books like this mean that publisher push retailers have to order them to appease fans rather than give readers a genuine choice or help them recognise the potential of a quality independent book.  What makes it worse is the price, higher than a standard book, but more pages of drivel doesn’t equate to a  better value book.

I may be in the minority, but when publishers put out books like this I am more than a little annoyed at the disregard publishers can hold  the one thing they need……..readers, of which in this case, I am glad that I am not.
