“I don’t think I’ll be the only guest at the party.” – Tony Stark
This issue opens with Tony Stark headed out to Charles Xavier’s X-Mansion where he runs into Daredevil. Kitty Pride greets them at the door and scares the crap out of Tony. There are a few other people who Tony and Matt Murdock run into that you might not expect in this issue, no spoilers but a few surprises lie within. The clues are finally put together in this issue and we come close to discovering a milestone about Logan’s whereabouts.
The Creative team:
Charles Soule brings us slowly into this issue. Like most first issues, we need a lot of exposition and Wolverine’s been gone a long time. Our heroes gather at the mansion to put the pieces together. The obligatory meeting of the minds brings us a lot of information about old Wolvie. That isn’t to say that there’s no action in this issue, Soule picks up the pace in a nice way and places the entire X-Men headquarters in jeopardy. Hows that for heating things up!? A significant first issue in this series. Great stuff includes how Kitty Pride deals with the threat on the mansion, proving her heroism and the introduction of this issues villain, unlike any you’ve seen before.
Ramon Rosana has the artistic chops it takes to bring us this important issue. The panels are average and unassuming, lulling us into a false sense of security. No over the top heroics at first, but the surprises are there and his art is the perfect complement to this issues story. Highlights include our heroes going into action against this issues threat and the splash where Kitty pours all her strength into alleviating the threat.
In Conclusion:
A lot of people are anxiously awaiting the return of Marvel’s most popular X-Man and this team has brought us a true page-turner. The main villain shows just how ruthless she is when she so nonchalantly unleashes her power and wreaks havoc at the X-Men’s mansion. As with all sick and twisted lunatics, she believes she’s doing mankind a favor in her own warped way. But the price our heroes pay to learn her secret might be too great. and then she returns from whence she came and that means trouble for…to be continued. ***1/2
