REVIEW: Intertwined #6 (of 6)

All he wanted to do was settle his deceased uncle“s affairs in New York City and head back to China and take part in the Southeast Asia Open Martial Arts Tournament. Now Juan Jin has taken on his uncle“s mantle as the embodiment of the Spirit of the Earth. He faces ninjas and Chinatown street gangs controlled by the Spirit of Metal and the NYPD (due to various misunderstandings and wounded street thugs).

Oh, the Spirit of Metal also has the totems of all the spirits and with them is controlling the other three Spirits ”“ Metal, Water, and Fire. With the gangs and control of the Spirits, he plans on bursting out of Chinatown and making all of mankind pay for their sins.

Juan has a busy day ahead of him.

Fabrice Sapolsky and Fred Pham Chuong bring everything to a head in this largely satisfying six part series. Chuong“s art appears a little inconsistent in places, but overall he has laid out clear, but dynamic fight sequences throughout this book and the series as a whole.

It is clear that Sapolsky (One Hit Wonder, Spider-Man Noir) and Chuong worked closely with one another for the series. They clearly deserve to share the title storyteller that they gave themselves. I really hope that they continue to tell stories either about Juan Jin or the other spirits, now that they have brought this series to an end.

The series clearly shows its roots in Bruce Lee movies, anime and other martial arts comics, but like the characters in the story, they have intertwined these elements and come up with something new. This is especially impressive in light of the clear missteps that occurred in Marvel“s Iron Fist series on Netflix. Sapolsky and Chuong avoided the pitfalls to bring an interesting and new story to life.
