Review: Killadelphia #1 Sins of the Father pt. 1
In the premier issue of Killadelphia #1 Sins of the Father pt. 1, we get introduced to the world of Philly Homicide Detective, James Sangster Sr., through the perspective of his son Jimmy Sangster Jr. The father had been entrusted with the work of bringing peace to the families of missing people who are most likely dead but he was running into a bunch of dead ends, but the bodies still kept piling up as his investigations lead him down a rabbit hole of crimes that have biological epidemic implications. At the heart of the case is a mysterious individual named Tevin Tompkins aka Seesaw.
The Art: As expected Jason Shawn Alexander (Spawn), masterfully strikes a balance between unrefined pencils to evoke someemotionally dark panels that couples well with Luis NCT mixing it up between colorful and black and white tones.
Best Monologue:” It makes sense that in these crazy times, madness find solace in the Past”-James Sangster Sr.
Best Panel: Throughout the book, there is a buildup in the hubris of Jimmy Sangster Jr., to the point where the driving factor for him, is to show his father that he is a better man than him, and that his father was crazy. The turning point of the story comes in a very quick panel that turns the story on its head and makes it a whole different thing all together.
Final Verdict: Make no mistake that this will be in the running for the hottest book that will be released this week. I gave this book extra points for correctly referencing Langston Hughes, Harlem:”What happens to a dream deferred?” It makes reference to the Philadelphia Yellow Fever Epidemic that resulted in, 5,000 dead and 20,000 fleeing the city to include President George Washington.
Going Forward: Don’t even think about sleeping on this. Rodney Barnes knows how to writes stuff that’s suitable for TV. His credits include: Marvel“s Runaways, Starz“s American Gods, The Boondocks, My Wife and Kids, Everybody Hates Chris. So, I wouldn’t be surprised to see this blow up.
Killadelphia #1 comes in two covers: the Cover A Regular is drawn by Jason Shawn Alexander ; while the Cover B Black Friday Incentive is drawn by one of my personal favorite cover artist, Francesco Mattina at a ratio of 1:25; however, interestingly the opening interest for the Matina Cover is pretty high; and there is also a LCSD cover drawn by Jason Shawn Alexander
SCORE: 4 out of 5
(W) Rodney Barnes
