Review: Marvels X #1

Marvels X #1, presents what happened before the events of the EARTH X (1999), the trilogy of series by Jim Krueger and Alex Ross.  Uatu, the blind Watcher, recruited Aaron Stack also known as X-51 to be his eyes and inform him of what is happening on Earth. X-51 finds that on the Earth everyone has super human abilities. There was a group of humans that managed to escape the  mutations split into two groups:  The Moon Tribe (who worshiped the moon) & the Bear Tribe (who worshiped the bear); The natural evolution of a human in the Earth X universe is to adapt to their environment, and eventually evolve to defend themselves.

In Marvels X #1, it opens prior to Earth X, showing the reader the first month of a “viral plague”, but later we find out that this most likely the Terrigen Mists released by Black Bolt and the Inhumans.  Terrigen Mist is a  or mutation-causing, substance arising as a vapor from the Terrigen Crystals, which are able to alter Inhuman biology.  So what happens is that those who are exposed either die, or gain super powers.

Issue #1 is presented from the point of view of a boy named David, whose whole family has been exposed to the Terrigen Mist, and he has been watching his family slowly disintegrate, until he is the only one left.

Final Verdict: The story presented in Marvels X is setup to be quite the epic undertaking, and has quite the road ahead of it if it wants to grab and maintain readers , especially when they already know where the road eventually leads.   but therein lay its weakness. I do like the layout which is quite different then Earth X which required  the reader to know a great deal or have access to Marvel’s catalog in order to enjoy the story. The story is can easily become confusing, of which the blame I lay half on the feet of the Letterer Cory Petit, and the other half on tired eyes.  I just totally missed where the panels jumped to a month later .  Still a good start, overall.

Overall: 3.5 stars out of 5
